Our Projects

Since the 500 Supporters' Group formed in 2001, funds donated by our Supporters have assisted the Christian Brothers complete significant health and education aid projects in Africa.

1. Kenya: Ruben Medical clinic

The "Makur slum", which is located in Nairobi, Kenya, is home to over 1 million people who live in horrific conditions that resemble a garbage tip, with the putrid smells from open sewers omnipresent.

Prior to the Brothers' involvement in this area, the residents received basic medical care from a tin shed.

However, since 2002, funds donated by our Supporters, and other generous people who provide financial assistance to the Brothers, have helped construct and operate a simple medical clinic that provides over 2,000 medical assessments each week.

2. Kenya: Ruben Primary School

The Christian Brothers realised that education was needed for the kids in the Makur slum.

Once again our Supporters (and others) provided the financial assistance to help the Brothers make simple improvements to tin sheds - i.e. basic ventilation was added (we're talking windows not air-conditioning!), concrete was laid to cover the dirt floor - and these sheds are now used as Primary School classrooms for over 1,000 kids who live in this slum.

Additionally, every kid who attends this school is provided with a simple meal every day by the Brothers.

3. Tanzania: Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School

Br Frank O'Shea, who hails from Warnambool and had been working in Tanzania for over 10 years decided to do something about the lack of Secondary School facilities in that country.

This was a huge and expensive project (the cost of building materials is certainly not cheap in Africa), but through incredibly hard work and determination on the part of Br Frank and the generosity of our Supporters and others, Br Frank's vision is now a reality and nearly 1,000 kids are enrolled in this Secondary School, which provides education right up to the equivalent of Year 11 & 12 for some of the poorest kids in Tanzania.

And, we're pleased to hear the students are producing fantastic academic results.

4. Tanzania: Student Hostel

Funds from our Supporters and others have helped the Brothers construct a simple hostel for Maasi students, who would otherwise have to travel for hours on foot to attend school each day.

5. Kenya: Brother Beausang Catholic Education Centre

Embulbul

The Brother Beausang Catholic Education Centre is a Catholic coeducational, not-for-profit day school, which serves the needs of young men and women from the Embul-bul area.

Funds from our Supporters and others have been used in the construction of this School, which is not far from the School at Ruben, and is now giving kids a chance to achieve their dreams.
